India always try to stay on the path of democracy after getting the independence from the Britishers . Now once again we are going to lose our democracy under the dominance of the Hindu nationalists BJP Govt. in which manner they have ruled which is alluding that India’s democracy and its minorities are in grave danger.

As per the Citizenship Amendment Bill is passed in 2019 which states that illegal immigrant for Hindu, Sikh, Parsi, Buddhist and Christian immigrants from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, who have lived in India without documentation. They will be granted fast track Indian citizenship in six years. So far 12 years of residence has been the standard eligibility requirement for naturalization. But They did not describe about the Muslim Communities so this bill totally discriminates against Muslims and violates the right to equality enshrined in the Constitution and creating the huge danger for the minorities.

As per the report of the The Economist Intelligence Unit, which report shows that India slipped 10 places to 51st position in the 2019 Global Democracy Index’s global ranking. India’s overall score fell from 7.23 in 2018 to 6.90 in the Index that provides a snapshot of the current state of democracy worldwide for 165 independent states and two territories.

Main cause of the democratic regression was an erosion of civil liberties(the freedom of a citizen to exercise customary rights, as of speech or assembly, without unwarranted or arbitrary interference by the government.) in the country.

The index is based on five categories

  1. Electoral process and pluralism
  2. The functioning of government
  3. Political participation
  4. Political culture
  5. civil liberties.

If Indians wants to regain its democracy then they should stand up for their values, regardless of who is being targeted. Indians should continue to participate in their democracy like participating in voting, speaking out when they perceive abuses of power, connecting with civic organizations etc. Indians should make sure that they elected the government which protect their interests, but not at the expense of rights of others. It should amend laws that single out certain groups for unequal treatment and pursue policies that capitalize on the diversity of Indian society, instead of sowing discord and division.
